BEING HUMAN: A FESTIVAL OF THE HUMANITIES

Author:

The theme of this year’s Being Human Festival, a national festival of the humanities, is New Worlds (12-22 November 2020). At the time of Covid and Black Lives Matter campaigns, and with a US election looming, the theme couldn’t be more appropriate.

The work of AboutFace, the project I lead at the University of York, is also perfectly aligned with the Festival, as it explores the emergence of face transplants as a radical form of innovative surgery. What new worlds are created through face transplants – for surgical teams, patients, donors and their respective families? And what does it mean to have visible facial difference in the selfie-obsessed world of the 21st century?

Come and join us for a series of free events exploring the meanings of the face, the transformative power of face transplants, and what it is to be human. Full details of all our events are available on the AboutFace website. Everything is free to view and online; booking is essential for some events.
